Collaborating with HQSoftware, the customer received cost-effective, intuitive, and portable VR training that meets the training requirements of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO).
With this training, aimed for use in the preliminary awareness phase, ground support equipment (GSE) staff no longer need to physically visit the airport area. This approach improves personnel safety, speeds up on-site training, and reduces overall training costs by 47%.

Customer
The customer is a UK-based training center that offers offline and online learning materials across various sectors, including aviation, business, law, and more.
The customer turned to HQSoftware with the aim of developing a training program tailored to a specific airport in the UAE.
Solution
The goal of the VR training is to educate ground handling staff on how to operate ground support equipment within a particular airport area, including the regulations to be followed. The VR training includes educational simulations for operating 6 types of equipment:
- towbarless aircraft tractors;
- passenger ladders;
- baggage tractors;
- ground power units;
- catering trucks; and
- baggage belt loaders.
Completing the simulation for each type of equipment takes about 30 minutes, providing a total of 3 hours of comprehensive training.
The training also includes 4 interactive GACA-mandated training modules covering:
- airside safety awareness;
- airside driving;
- security awareness training; and
- emergency response planning.
Each training simulation comes with assessment and grading schemes based on pass/fail criteria. This platform is integrated with a Learning Management System that transfers and stores data and generates real-time reports.
Development Specifics
To assess the environment for which VR training is intended, and to understand its operational dynamics and current training delivery methods, two HQSoftware representatives visited the airport in the UAE.
With this information, the team was able to define the requirements for VR hardware, determine the required quantity, and provide a final project estimate and roadmap.
As a result, our team developed a complete VR training program in about 6 months.
This VR training solution can be adapted to any airport area, enabling the customer to offer it as a comprehensive training solution for multiple airports, thereby increasing potential revenue streams.
