CIOReview, a technology magazine for senior-level industry experts and IT adopters, featured HQSoftware as one of the 20 most promising IoT vendors worldwide in 2017. On this occasion, they interviewed our CTO Vasili Tarasevich to shed more light on the company’s story of carving out a niche in the industrial IoT and smart building markets.

We have always gone beyond simply connecting things, and now it’s rewarding to know our efforts are recognized by the business community. Our solutions help clients tackle some of the biggest challenges of today’s IoT, such as diversity of evolving hardware and software, security, and data exchange in resource-limited environments.

Diversity of Devices

In IoT, says Vasili, each environment is nearly unique. So, as an IoT application development company, we are challenged to make multivendor devices and technologies, talking in different protocols and data formats, work together in line with industry standards. For instance, our solution for remote mesh network management allows collection, processing, and visualization of real-time and metadata across geographically distributed devices of any number and type. The system is currently used by the world’s leader in automotive measurement and test systems, and a city municipality.

In smart home solution development, HQSoftware actually “teaches” devices to analyze and predict user habits instead of pure automation. This was the case with our customizable mobile app for smart building and yacht management, which enables users to control lighting, HVAC, video surveillance, energy consumption and much more from everywhere. In this project, we combined a set of heterogeneous devices into a single intelligent, easy-to-use system, tailored to each resident’s specific needs and habits.

Security

Depending on the application area, a system’s security requirements may vary greatly. According to Vasili, security might not be the biggest issue in the industrial IoT, where machines are located inside well-protected private networks of factories and plants, yet in other settings, it well may be. To address this challenge, HQSoftware implements VPN tunnels and encrypted communication between connected devices, to name just a few proven security tools used by the company.

Data Exchange in Resource-Limited Environments

HQSoftware’s IoT experts are also well-versed in providing seamless data exchange across devices with limited CPU and RAM resources. This was the case with our IIoT solution that helps car manufacturers reduce costs while performing various pre-production tests, such as gas emission, endurance, and engine performance, in simulated road-driving conditions. We took full advantage of connected smart sensors to enable the collection, processing, and measurement of data from multiple vehicles and vehicle components in alignment with high testing standards.

Fast Prototyping as a Key Differentiator

We have refined our processes to ensure that our solutions really respond to customer needs, which usually come down to building fast prototypes and POCs, says Vasili.

Last year, we helped our German customer turn their innovative idea of a BYOD entertainment app for air travelers into an MVP that has already attracted several investors. The app allows users to watch live TV programs and VOD as well as book hotels, rent cars and check weather forecasts, whether they are on board, at the airport or in the city. Additionally, it serves as a platform for advertisers, providing rich targeting options and in-depth statistical reporting.

Ready for Bigger Challenges

While operating mostly in the European markets, HQSoftware is looking to extend its IoT activities in the US, too. The world is approaching the moment when intelligent machines will start to build other intelligent machines, says Vasili, and we are getting geared up for this revolution.
